A comfortably contemporary stay just 400 yards from the sands of Widemouth Bay.
What is a retreat to Cornwall without at least a few trips to the beach? Whether it’s a bucket-and-spade day on the sand during the temperate heights of summer, or a brisk and blustery walk along the shoreline as you watch the winter swells roll in, the beach and the ocean are what immediately spring to mind for most when they contemplate a break in the Duchy.
A Cornish Retreat
The Retreat in Widemouth Bay is exactly what the name suggests, affording the kind of Cornish holiday that you’ll want to repeat time and time again. And if the coast is on your mind, you may be interested to know that it lies just 400 yards from the surf and sand of Widemouth Bay!
So, what can you expect when you arrive? Starting outside, immediately apparent are the patio doors, inviting you to throw them open and invite the sea air in. The tiered garden provides the perfect spot in which to enjoy a morning coffee or a sun-downer, and when the sun’s shining, why not throw some coals on the barbeque and enjoy a proper al fresco feast? The nearby Beach House Shop has an excellent fish counter where you can choose from the local day’s catch, and really, after a day spent on the beach, what could be more appropriate than a grilled seafood supper?
What to expect
For me, when I hear the word ‘feast’, a picture comes immediately to mind of gatherings with friends and family, enjoying one another’s company over good food and, in an ideal world, a drink or two. This is precisely what The Retreat has been designed to afford; sleeping up to eight across four bedrooms, including a beautiful master with its own en suite and king-size bed, there’s plenty of space for a group of friends or family to spread out. You can do so in luxury, too, thanks to the stunning interiors. The accommodation is perfectly laid out, designed and presented by Iroka Design, a leading Cornish interiors company. An elegant and understated coastal theme runs throughout the property, while a refreshing combination of functionality and style makes for a retreat that ticks all the boxes of every guest. Indeed, at The Retreat, there’s no such thing as ‘style over substance’; an open-plan living and dining area provides sociable space for starting and ending your day, while the sumptuous bedrooms invite salt and sun-kissed explorers to rest their heads and re-energise for the next day’s adventure. Guests looking to kick back and relax can do so with the aid of Smart TVs (including those in each of the bedrooms), a PlayStation in the children’s bedroom, and a DVD player and Smart TV with SKY and Bluetooth sound bar in the living area, ideal for curling up and winding down with a film.
Out & About
Having said all of that, if we were to go back and think about those all-important trips to the beach, it’s fair to say that perhaps the most alluring aspect of this impressive escape is its location. It’s perfectly positioned to capitalise on everything north Cornwall has to offer, with both dog-friendly and lifeguarded beaches nearby, and endless miles of coastal walks starting right on the doorstep. Of course, it could be that you fancy a round (or two) of Cornish links, in which case Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club is just a short drive away. Or, if you’re planning to hit the waves, Widemouth Bay is renowned as a surf spot, and with Freewave Surf Academy providing lessons and equipment hire for all abilities, everybody can feel the rush that only a surfboard can provide!
In prime position to capitalise on all of the amazing walks, activities, incredible eateries and everything else that the north coast has to offer, you can strike out for a different adventure every day, relaxed in the knowledge that when the sun dips beyond the horizon, you can return to a holiday HQ that’s a retreat by name, as well as by nature.
