Gooseham Mill House, Gooseham in North Cornwall
Gooseham Mill House is a lovingly restored 16th century cottage in beautiful, rambling gardens. It lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the base of the Marsland Valley, a nature reserve owned by the Devon Wildlife Trust and protected for its butterflies and river ecology.
The cottage has been decorated and furnished with infinite care and attention to detail, marrying a centuries’ old ambience with all the modern convenience you would want for a comfortable holiday, and even a music room to add to the gaiety.
The Marsland River is the county line between Devon and Cornwall and runs right through the property’s endlessly delightful gardens. Guests have the unique opportunity to pick seasonal produce from lovely vegetable plots and fruit trees in Devon and enjoy it in Cornwall. Colourful in all seasons, the gardens are full of little wonders. As you stroll, you will discover a stone circle, an Inukchuk, a Celtic cross and dining tables made from the original mill stones. Lady Patricia’s ponds, named after the wife of the philosopher Bertrand Russell (a former owner) teem with wildlife. Enjoy badminton, table tennis, croquet or netball on the large lawn. Or simply sit on the patio, listen to the river, gaze at the flower beds, watch the wildlife and forget the hurly burly of everyday life.
Or you can disappear to the summerhouse, with its rocking chair and hammock, for an afternoon of seclusion; or to the barley mill, furnished as a den for the kids with bean bags, games and a TV; or to the many hidden places to sit, read and wile away the day.
If you can tear yourself away, a walk through the car-free valley takes you to the spectacular Atlantic cliffs and along the dramatic South West Coastal Path, or up to the artists’ village of Welcombe and the excellent Smithy Inn. Or discover the glorious local beaches – some owned by the National Trust – with their shallow waters ideal for body boarding and surfing; or Morwenstow with its famous pub and tea rooms. Or even take a ride from the stables, a short stroll away.
